The Cebu Provincial Government, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, has announced plans to establish a local Wagyu beef industry through an artificial insemination program aimed at upgrading the province's cattle herds.
Artificial Insemination Program Details
Dr. Mary Rose Bahian-Vincoy, head of the Provincial Veterinarian Office, confirmed that Wagyu semen, distributed under the National Artificial Insemination Program since 2024, will be deployed to municipalities. This will allow farmers to produce Wagyu-cross offspring from their existing herds.
Artificial insemination is a breeding technique where sperm is artificially introduced into a female animal's reproductive tract to improve reproduction and genetic quality. The national government began distributing Wagyu semen to various provinces in 2024, including Cebu.
Current Cattle Industry in Cebu
Cebu Province currently leads the Philippines in cattle head inventory, accounting for 60 percent of the total in Central Visayas. This strong foundation supports the expansion of Wagyu-cross livestock production. Traditionally, local raisers have favored Brahman cattle for their adaptability, but with the breed well-established, farmers are now open to diversification.
Implementation and Support
The Wagyu semen is preserved in liquid nitrogen and distributed to livestock farmers and artificial insemination technicians assigned to various municipalities. Vincoy stated, "We can do this. There will be more semen that we can distribute, and we can request artificial insemination technicians to be the ones to infuse it in the municipalities." Other cattle breed semen also remains available through the Provincial Veterinarian Office, offering farmers a range of options.
Vincoy expressed satisfaction with the adoption of AI technology in Cebu, noting, "I'm happy to say that Cebuanos adopted the artificial insemination program. If we look at Central Visayas, Cebu Province is number one in cattle head inventory."
Economic and Market Benefits
The initiative is expected to increase the value of locally raised cattle, strengthen food security, and generate additional income for farmers. Wagyu cattle, originally from Japan, are known for exceptional marbling, tenderness, and premium-quality meat, commanding significantly higher prices in luxury dining markets worldwide. Provincial officials hope this will help Cebu's livestock industry tap into higher-value markets and boost the agricultural economy.
