DA Sets Price Cap on Imported Red Onions to Curb Overpricing
DA Implements Price Cap on Imported Red Onions

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has announced a decisive move to protect consumers from skyrocketing prices of a kitchen staple. Starting Monday, December 1, a maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) will be enforced for imported red onions.

Unjustified Price Hikes Prompt Government Action

DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel revealed the new measure on Friday, November 28, citing alarming and unjustified increases in the retail prices of imported red onions. He expressed serious concern over the timing of these price surges, especially with the Christmas season fast approaching.

During an interview, Secretary Laurel provided a clear breakdown of the expected costs. "Considering the import cost of around PHP60 per kilogram, red onions should not be sold above PHP120," he stated. He strongly condemned the current market rates, asserting, "Selling at PHP250 to PHP300 is clearly profiteering."

Strict Monitoring and Potential Penalties

The DA is not stopping at just setting a price cap. The agency plans to launch stricter market monitoring and tracing operations to identify the sources of the inflated prices. This crackdown aims to ensure compliance and protect Filipino households during the holiday period.

As of November 26, the market situation was stark. Imported red onions were being sold for PHP200 to PHP300 per kilogram, with a prevailing price of PHP240. Meanwhile, local onions were priced even higher, ranging from PHP250 to PHP330 per kilogram.

The Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), is also reviewing the penalties that will be imposed on violators under the Price Act.

A Call to Action for the Public

Secretary Laurel made a direct appeal to the public to remain vigilant. He encouraged consumers to be active participants in this effort by monitoring their local markets for unreasonable pricing.

His advice was straightforward and empowering: "Huwag niyong bilhin, magreklamo kayo, tawaran niyo kasi hindi tama iyon (Don't buy it, complain, and haggle because it's not the right price)." This call to action urges Filipinos to report violations and resist overpriced goods, directly contributing to the government's price stabilization efforts.
