DSWD Project LAWA at BINHI Boosts Fishing Livelihoods

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 7 continues to provide livelihood opportunities for fishing communities through Project LAWA at BINHI (Plab), after partner-beneficiaries in Olango Island, Lapu-Lapu City successfully harvested bangus (milkfish).

Harvest Success in Barangay San Vicente

On May 18, 2026, beneficiaries in Barangay San Vicente harvested 502 kilograms of bangus, generating total sales of P100,400. The event was attended and supported by Ms. Irene Montejo, regional focal person of Plab, along with staff from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) of Lapu-Lapu City, as part of the ongoing development of sustainable livelihoods in coastal communities.

Barangay Pangan-an Harvest

Two days later, on May 20, 2026, partner-beneficiaries in Barangay Pangan-an achieved another success by harvesting 1,001 kilograms of bangus. The harvest generated total sales of P150,150, based on a price of P150 per kilogram. The activity was facilitated and supported by DSWD 7 and CSWDO Lapu-Lapu City staff, with the local government providing support for the project's full implementation.

Overall Impact

In total, the two communities harvested 1,503 kilograms of bangus and generated P250,550 in sales. This success demonstrates the positive results of community unity, the hard work of beneficiaries, and the continuous collaboration among various sectors.

According to DSWD, these achievements confirm the impact of Project LAWA at BINHI in providing a sustainable source of income for fishing families while also boosting local food production. The support of the local government played a significant role in the success of the project activities.
