Mindanao Quake: P1B Damage, 61 Dead, 40 Missing

The magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Maasim, Sarangani, has caused infrastructure damage exceeding P1 billion, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). The quake, which hit on Monday, June 8, 2026, damaged 725 facilities across Mindanao and other affected areas.

Casualties and Damage

The NDRRMC reported that the death toll has reached 61, with 54 fatalities in Soccsksargen and 7 in Davao Region. Injuries total 1,403, mostly in Soccsksargen, while 40 individuals remain missing—22 in Davao Region and 18 in Soccsksargen. Search-and-rescue operations continue in the hardest-hit areas.

The earthquake damaged 54,000 houses, including 9,900 destroyed and 44,100 partially damaged. Approximately 173,000 families, or 724,000 individuals, were affected. Currently, 34 evacuation centers are sheltering about 2,000 families (10,000 individuals) who fled due to safety risks and structural damage.

State of Calamity and Assistance

Thirteen cities and municipalities have declared a state of calamity, enabling faster access to emergency funds and resources for relief and recovery. Government agencies and local government units have provided P67.6 million in assistance, including food packs, emergency shelter materials, and other relief supplies.

Rehabilitation efforts will require substantial resources for repairing and reconstructing damaged roads, bridges, public buildings, schools, and other critical facilities. Emergency responders continue damage assessments and clearing operations, while aftershocks persist in parts of Mindanao. Officials emphasize that figures remain subject to validation as teams reach isolated areas.
