Philippines IT-BPM Industry Seeks Flexible Work-from-Home Amid Fuel Price Surge

The IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) has formally requested the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) to temporarily allow greater flexibility in work-from-home (WFH) arrangements for Peza-registered IT-BPM companies. This move comes as the industry grapples with rising fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which are increasing transportation costs for employees and creating operational pressures.

Request for Business Continuity Planning Recognition

In a memorandum to members, IBPAP president Jack Madrid stated that the industry group has asked Peza to recognize the current situation as a Business Continuity Planning (BCP) circumstance. This recognition would enable firms to temporarily exceed the existing 50 percent limit on remote work for registered projects. Madrid emphasized that the request aims to provide immediate operational flexibility to help companies manage the escalating commuting expenses faced by their workforce.

Addressing Operational and Employee Challenges

Madrid explained that the proposal is designed to mitigate the challenges posed by higher fuel prices, which are directly impacting employee welfare and business operations. He noted, "This proposal is intended to provide practical and immediate flexibility for companies, enabling them to manage rising commuting costs, support employee welfare, and maintain operational continuity—while remaining aligned with the Create More framework." The initiative seeks to balance business needs with employee support during this period of economic strain.

Ongoing Advocacy and Industry Engagement

IBPAP is actively engaging with Peza leadership on this matter and will continue to advocate for measures that protect business continuity, workforce stability, and the global competitiveness of the Philippine IT-BPM industry. The group has committed to keeping industry members informed as discussions with Peza progress, ensuring transparency and collaboration in addressing these pressing issues. This effort underscores the industry's proactive approach to adapting to external economic pressures while sustaining growth and efficiency.
