Japan Consulate Hosts Free Bonsai Workshop in Davao

The Consulate General of Japan in Davao will hold a free bonsai workshop titled “Introduction to the World of Bonsai: A Beginner-Friendly Workshop” on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the Davao City National High School Multi-Purpose Gym. The event is part of the year-long celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Japan–Philippines Friendship.

Workshop Details and Partners

Co-organized with the Davao Bonsai Society, the workshop aims to promote appreciation of traditional Japanese culture among students and beginners. The program includes an introductory lecture on bonsai and a hands-on session where participants learn fundamentals of cultivation and design.

Master Demonstrator: Masashi Hirao

A highlight is a live demonstration by renowned Japanese bonsai master Mr. Masashi Hirao, known as the “Bonsai Warrior.” He blends traditional techniques with unique methods to create a new style of bonsai. In 2013, he was appointed a Japan Cultural Envoy by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. His international achievements include appearing at the Japan Pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo and donating bonsai to the Royal Family of Bhutan in 2016. From 2016 to 2022, he exhibited at the Setouchi Triennale and the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. He has also designed decor for the FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL YouTube interview area and the “Otobutai” stage at Nijo Castle.
