A 68-year-old man was found dead after falling from a Magtalisay tree on Friday morning, July 3, 2026, in Purok Kawayan, Barangay Cabiangon, Pinamungajan town. The victim was identified by police as Benedicto Nelmida, a senior citizen and bachelor, who resided in Purok Rose, Barangay Rizal in the same municipality.
Discovery of the Body
Initial investigation by the Pinamungajan Municipal Police Station revealed that Antonio Gorres was tending his carabao in the area when he discovered the victim's lifeless body lying on the ground at around 6:00 AM. The victim's left hand was still clutching a bundle of Magtalisay leaves.
Witness Accounts
According to neighbors, Nelmida was last seen on Thursday afternoon carrying a bolo. He was described as intoxicated after consuming alcoholic beverages. The victim was heading to the forest to gather fodder for his goats.
Residents were shocked when the victim was found under the Magtalisay tree, with broken branches scattered around the area.
Police Investigation
Investigators found no evidence of foul play in Nelmida's death. Based on statements from the family and the medico-legal assessment, the victim sustained severe head and body injuries from the fall, which caused his death.
