The Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) has installed and activated a power generator at the Talicud Island Polyclinic to guarantee uninterrupted healthcare services on the island. Mayor Lemuel “Toto” Reyes led the installation and activation ceremony on April 29, 2026, emphasizing that the generator restoration is a practical and urgent measure to ensure continuous medical service delivery.
Addressing Long-Standing Power Issues
The generator aims to resolve the clinic’s chronic power supply problems, which previously relied on unstable electricity. According to a Facebook post by Samal Island Information on April 29, frequent outages have disrupted operations, and the generator is expected to provide a dependable backup power source, especially during emergencies.
Free X-Ray Services Earlier This Month
Earlier, on April 16, 2026, the polyclinic offered free X-ray services to residents of Talicud Island. This initiative aimed to detect and monitor common respiratory diseases in the community. Eligible beneficiaries include senior citizens, individuals suspected of having pulmonary diseases, and residents with a persistent cough lasting more than two weeks.
Vital Healthcare Facility
The Talicud Island Polyclinic is the only healthcare facility on the island offering complete medical services, including an X-ray room, operating room, dialysis room, and laboratory. It is considered a vital facility capable of catering to the healthcare needs of local residents.
Tourism and Infrastructure Context
Talicud Island, located off the southwestern coast of Igacos, is known for its white-sand beaches and tourism spots, making it an important area for local tourism and livelihoods. The island has long struggled with unstable electricity, characterized by extended brownouts, weak infrastructure, and heavy reliance on generators. However, the entry of Davao Light and Power Company into Igacos is expected to help solve these power problems.
