Villar Family Expresses Confidence in DOJ Dismissal of SEC Allegations
The Villar family has firmly maintained their innocence in the face of a complaint filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with the Department of Justice (DOJ). Following a preliminary investigation, their legal representatives have emphasized that no laws were violated.
Legal Defense and Allegations
Attorney Robel Lomibao, representing the Villar family and their companies, stated that their participation in the prosecution's hearing was aimed at clearing their names and refuting the allegations. The SEC's complaint includes charges of market manipulation, insider trading, and misleading disclosures against former Senators Manny and Cynthia Villar, Senators Mark and Camille Villar, Villar Land Holdings and Corporation, among others.
Lomibao shared that the Villar camp is praying and hopeful that the prosecution will ultimately dismiss the complaints. Senator Mark Villar believes there is no solid evidence or basis to suggest any legal violations or intent to deceive, a point echoed by his lawyer, Attorney Rhegine Peralta-Abrera.
Prosecution's Cautionary Stance
Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Peter Ong clarified that it is too early or "premature" to assume the SEC's complaints against the Villar family will be dismissed. This highlights the ongoing nature of the legal proceedings and the need for further review.
The case underscores the complexities of financial regulations and the high-profile nature of the individuals involved, with both sides preparing for potential developments in the justice system.
