Senator Hontiveros Demands Concrete Government Action Amid Soaring Oil Prices
Senator Risa Hontiveros has issued a strong appeal to the government, urging immediate and decisive action to address the growing crisis in the transport sector caused by the relentless increase in oil prices. The senator emphasized that temporary measures are insufficient and called for comprehensive solutions to support both drivers and commuters.
Transport Sector Struggles with Mounting Losses
Hontiveros highlighted the severe impact on public utility vehicles, noting that many operators are reducing their trips or ceasing operations entirely due to financial losses. She pointed out that while commuter reliance on public transportation is increasing, the availability of these services is declining, creating a critical gap in mobility.
The senator revealed that modern jeepney units are estimated to lose approximately ₱1,000 per day, a situation that threatens the livelihood of drivers and the efficiency of the transport network. This financial strain has prompted calls for more robust government intervention beyond short-term fixes.
Proposed Solutions and Subsidy Package
In response to the crisis, Hontiveros has proposed Senate Bill No. 1986, which outlines a substantial ₱52.8 billion subsidy package. This package includes:
- ₱12 billion allocated specifically for transport subsidies benefiting PUV drivers, delivery riders, and TNVS operators.
- Support for transport cooperatives to enhance their operational stability.
- Expansion of the service contracting program to ensure continuous driver operations.
While acknowledging the existing P5,000 transport subsidy, Hontiveros argued that it is inadequate and must be expanded to provide meaningful relief. She stressed that the government needs to accelerate the distribution of aid and remove bureaucratic obstacles, such as the "first owner" rule, which complicates access for many operators.
Call for Urgent Government Intervention
The senator warned that without prompt action, the transport sector could face even more severe consequences, potentially leading to higher commodity prices and broader economic disruptions. Hontiveros insisted that the government must listen to the grievances of the transport community and implement concrete measures to mitigate the impact of oil price hikes.
