Consumer Group Demands Action as Fuel Prices Hit Record Highs in Cebu
In Cebu City, a gasoline station attendant adjusted the diesel price display at a station along Sergio Osmeña Boulevard on March 19, 2026, as fuel prices reached unprecedented levels. This surge is largely attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted global oil supplies and driven costs to new peaks.
Manifesto Against Oil Price Hikes
On Monday, March 30, 2025, members of the Alliance of Concerned Consumers in Electricity and Social Services (Access) signed a manifesto vehemently opposing the relentless oil price hikes. The group expressed deep frustration over the economic strain caused by these increases.
"We, the members of Access, rise up in outrage against the relentless oil price hikes that suffocate our wallets and strangle our livelihoods. The government's inaction is a slap in the face, a betrayal of the people's trust," stated Wennie Sancho, president of Access.
Sancho emphasized that consumers have long endured the consequences of what he described as corporate greed and governmental incompetence. "Prices soar, while our purchasing power plummets. The peso crumbles, and our future dims. We demand an end to this exploitation, accountability, and relief," he added.
Calls for Government Intervention
Access urged the government to move beyond empty promises and implement tangible solutions to address the crisis. Sancho outlined key demands, including:
- Regulate oil prices to prevent excessive increases.
- Boost local production to reduce dependency on imports.
- Prioritize people's welfare over corporate profits.
He also directed a strong message to oil companies, asserting that consumers will not remain silent. "Respect our rights, respect our economy. Reduce prices now. We, the consumers, will not be held hostage by oil price extortion. We will fight for our rights, we will fight for justice," Sancho declared.
Specific Demands and Broader Appeal
The group's manifesto includes several specific demands to alleviate the burden on consumers:
- An immediate rollback of oil prices to more affordable levels.
- Strict regulation of oil companies to ensure fair practices.
- Increased transparency in pricing mechanisms to prevent hidden costs.
- Support for local energy production to enhance self-sufficiency.
Access called on all consumers to unite in this fight, emphasizing the importance of collective action. They encouraged people to stand together against oil price hikes and demand a fair deal that protects their economic interests.
The ongoing situation highlights the broader impact of global conflicts on local economies, with Cebu residents facing significant financial challenges due to the fuel price surge. As the crisis continues, consumer advocacy groups like Access are pushing for urgent measures to provide relief and ensure accountability from both government and corporate entities.
