PNP Reports Decline in Gas Stations Shuttered Amid Fuel Supply Issues

The Philippine National Police (PNP) disclosed on Monday, March 30, 2026, that the number of gasoline stations forced to close across the nation has decreased to 365, down from a previous count of 425. This reduction comes as many stations faced critical shortages in petroleum products available for sale, leading to temporary shutdowns.

Key Factors Behind the Closures

During a press briefing at Camp Crame, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño explained that the primary reasons for the closures include non-delivered petroleum products and a lack of stock at various outlets. He noted that the figure had initially dropped to 369 on Sunday before further declining to 365 by Monday morning. "The main factors [for closures] are undelivered petroleum products and others having no stocks. Some have closed, while others have reopened due to restocking," Tuaño stated, highlighting the fluctuating nature of the situation as supplies are replenished.

Ongoing Investigations into Hoarding and Exploitation

In addition to the supply challenges, Tuaño reported that there are currently seven active cases related to hoarding and exploitation of the fuel shortage crisis. These cases are distributed across multiple regions:

  • Three cases in Region 5 (Bicol)
  • Two cases in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas)
  • One case in Region 3 (Central Luzon)
  • One case in Region 11 (Davao Region)

The Department of Energy has formally requested assistance from the police to curb these illegal activities, aiming to prevent further market manipulation and ensure fair distribution of available fuel resources.

Impact and Response Efforts

The decline in closed stations suggests some improvement in supply logistics, but the ongoing hoarding cases indicate persistent challenges in managing the fuel crisis. Authorities are intensifying efforts to monitor and address these issues, with a focus on stabilizing the market and supporting affected businesses and consumers. This situation underscores the broader economic and operational pressures faced by the energy sector in the Philippines during periods of supply disruption.
