The Philippine government has taken a significant step to strengthen national energy security with the approval of two new petroleum exploration projects in the Visayas region. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has greenlit these initiatives, as confirmed by the Department of Energy (DOE).
Revitalizing the Alegria Oil and Gas Field in Cebu
Service Contract 89 focuses on the reopening of the Alegria Oil and Gas Field in Cebu after a three-year hiatus. This field is estimated to contain approximately 27.93 million barrels of oil, with a recoverable volume of around 3.35 million barrels. Additionally, it holds about 6.6 billion cubic feet of natural gas that can be extracted. The project is expected to generate employment opportunities and enhance the energy supply for the Visayas, contributing to regional economic stability.
Exploring Natural Hydrogen in Leyte
Service Contract 90 in Leyte is dedicated to the exploration of natural hydrogen through studies of ophiolite formations, which have the potential to produce hydrogen gas. This innovative approach marks a forward-looking effort to diversify the country's energy sources beyond traditional fossil fuels.
Government's Strategic Energy Goals
DOE Secretary Sharon Garin emphasized that these approvals are part of the government's ongoing strategy to develop local energy resources and reduce dependence on imported oil. This move is particularly crucial amid the volatile prices in the global oil market, which can impact the Philippine economy. By investing in domestic exploration, the administration aims to create a more resilient and self-sufficient energy sector.
The approval of these contracts underscores a commitment to leveraging the Philippines' natural resources to meet future energy demands while fostering job creation and economic growth in the Visayas.
