NGCP Declares Yellow Alert for Luzon and Visayas Grids Following Power Plant Outages
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has placed the Luzon grid under a yellow alert status on Thursday, citing an insufficient power supply margin. This alert was officially announced in an advisory and is scheduled to remain in effect from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. The decision follows the tripping of several critical power plants across the region, which has significantly strained the grid's operational capacity.

A yellow alert is triggered when the power supply reserves drop to a dangerously thin margin above the actual demand. This situation indicates a heightened risk of potential power shortages and requires immediate attention to prevent more severe disruptions. As of the latest reports, the available capacity for the Luzon grid stands at 12,223 megawatts (MW), while the peak demand is recorded at 11,996 MW. The NGCP has identified that 35 power plants are currently on forced outage, and an additional 14 are operating at reduced capacity. Collectively, these issues have rendered 5,137.2 MW of power unavailable, exacerbating the supply shortfall.
Key Outages Affecting the Grid
Several major power generation facilities have contributed to the current crisis. Notable outages include Units 1, 2, and 3 of Excellent Energy Resources Inc., along with Block B of the Ilijan Power Plant located in Batangas. Additionally, the shutdown of Magat hydro units 1 through 4 in Isabela has further reduced the available power supply. These disruptions have collectively strained the grid's ability to meet the escalating energy demands.
Visayas Grid Also Under Yellow Alert
In a related development, the Visayas grid will also be placed under a yellow alert from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The available capacity in this region is reported at 2,597 MW, against a peak demand of 2,368 MW. According to the NGCP, 15 plants are on forced outage, and 13 are running at reduced capacity, resulting in 679.2 MW being unavailable. This alert has been partly attributed to the lack of power imports from Luzon via the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link, which typically helps balance supply across grids.
