Philippines' Oil Supply Secure for 50 Days, DOE Confirms Amid High Prices
The Department of Energy (DOE) has assured the public that the Philippines maintains a sufficient oil supply buffer for at least 50 days, with additional shipments scheduled to arrive this April to bolster reserves. This announcement comes as part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the nation's energy security amidst global market fluctuations.
Incoming Shipments to Boost Buffer Stocks
According to DOE Undersecretary Sandy Sales, approximately 900,000 barrels of oil are slated for delivery throughout April. The first shipment of 300,000 barrels is expected to arrive from Malaysia before April 10, followed by two subsequent shipments originating from North Asia and India. These imports are strategically timed to enhance the country's emergency reserves and prevent potential shortages.
Emergency Energy Security Program in Action
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin emphasized that these buffer stocks are being procured under the Emergency Energy Security Program, a proactive initiative designed to safeguard against supply disruptions. Garin noted that the Philippines still has ample time to further increase its oil inventory if necessary, ensuring resilience in the face of unforeseen challenges.
Current Supply Levels and Price Concerns
Based on DOE data, the current supply of petroleum products, including gasoline and diesel, ranges from 47 to over 100 days, depending on the specific type. Despite this robust supply, fuel prices remain notably high in Metro Manila and other urban centers. Gasoline prices currently fluctuate between P87.90 and P104.10 per liter, while diesel has surged to as high as P154.20 per liter, reflecting ongoing market pressures and logistical costs.
The DOE continues to monitor the situation closely, balancing supply management with efforts to address consumer concerns over rising fuel costs. This dual approach aims to maintain energy stability while exploring long-term solutions to mitigate price volatility in the Philippine market.
