Turning Disappointment into Opportunity: A Business Lesson from Bunny Pages
Many years ago, Bunny Pages learned a crucial lesson about attitude, opportunity, and perspective from what initially seemed like a minor letdown. He was invited to host a major event for a local university, scheduled at the old Cebu Plaza Hotel in Nivel Hills, and was told he would serve as the emcee. Naturally excited, he prepared thoroughly and arrived early at the venue.
When he stepped onto the stage to test the microphone, someone approached him politely and asked, “Sir, may I know who you are?” Pages replied, “I’m Bunny Pages. I’m hosting the program this morning.” The person looked surprised and said, “But sir, I have a copy of the program here and the emcee is not you.” It turned out there had been a miscommunication—someone had forgotten to inform him that another host had already been assigned.
1. Choosing Your Response Wisely
At that moment, Pages faced two choices: react negatively or accept the situation and move forward. He chose the latter. Disappointments are an inevitable part of life and business, and the real question is not what happens to us, but how we respond. Instead of feeling upset or embarrassed, he told himself that maybe this simply wasn’t meant for him that day. This simple shift in mindset allowed him to stay calm and think clearly about his next steps.
2. Asking a Better Question
Rather than dwelling on the mistake, Pages asked himself a more productive question: What is the best use of my time right now? Since he was already out, he decided to drive to SM City Cebu, which had just opened at that time. He walked around the mall, observing the spaces and the flow of customers, turning a potential setback into an exploratory opportunity.
3. Discovering Unexpected Opportunities
As he walked through the mall, Pages saw what looked like an ideal location for their small but promising concept then—Thirsty Juices and Shakes. He immediately went to the leasing office and spoke with the leasing manager. Fortunately, the timing was perfect. The space was available, and they secured a very good location right then and there. That small decision later became one of the key steps that helped Thirsty grow to over 150 stores today.
Looking back, Pages often wonders: what if he had stayed at the hotel or gone home feeling angry and insulted? He might never have discovered that opportunity, highlighting how life can redirect us toward better paths when we remain open and proactive.
4. Life’s Redirections and Long-Term Success
A similar situation occurred when Pages was searching for a location for their school, Playhouse Children Center and Bright Academy. A large property had been promised to them, but the deal fell through. He could have reacted negatively or picked a quarrel with the owner, who happened to be a friend. Instead, he chose acceptance again. Soon after, another property was offered by the same person, one that turned out to be even better. That became the site where they built the school that served families for over 20 years.
Final Reflections on Resilience
Not every disappointment is a setback. Sometimes, it is simply life redirecting us toward something better. When a door closes, don’t waste energy forcing it open. Stay calm, stay positive, and stay alert. Because very often, the opportunity behind the disappointment is just waiting to be discovered. This story underscores the power of a resilient mindset in entrepreneurship and personal growth.
