GCash and DMW Empower Returning OFWs with Digital Tools for Local Business
GCash and DMW Help OFWs Build Local Businesses

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and GCash have partnered to launch “Buy Lokal, By OFW,” a program aimed at helping returning Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) build sustainable businesses. The initiative combines digital financial tools with reintegration support, providing a clearer path for OFWs to transition from overseas employment to local entrepreneurship.

Scaling Business with Digital Tools

OFW entrepreneurs are turning to digital solutions to meet the evolving needs of their operations and customers. Mirasol Bituin, who spent years planning and saving before returning from Taiwan, now runs Mhira Natural Soap and Cosmetics. She uses GCash’s SoundPay device to streamline transactions as her customer base expands.

Kaiselle Cao Atun and her husband invested in Farm Ridge by Desmond Farm, focusing on cacao farming and organic practices. They invited fellow OFWs to invest, requiring a system to handle multiple stakeholders efficiently. GCash’s flexibility enabled faster, more secure payments for individual and bulk orders, improving efficiency and customer experience.

Marilou Sioson, drawing from her husband’s culinary background, expanded Sauce On Food House from a small food venture into a line of specialty sauces. Government programs helped refine products and secure certifications, while GCash supported daily operations and bulk transactions.

Boosting Support for MSMEs

Government programs are strengthening support for MSMEs, helping OFW entrepreneurs sustain their businesses. Chie Vincoy transitioned from a hobby to Deomare Consumer Goods Retailing, a formal business supported by DMW programs that provided mentorship and trade opportunities.

Christian Facun, who returned from Rome, turned to organic farming in Tarlac after medical expenses derailed his initial plans. Through the program, he gained structured support and market exposure, while digital tools help manage supply and customer connections.

Caroline De Ocampo, who returned in 2006, built Cleode Health & Beauty through trial and error. She notes that today’s returning workers have clearer pathways with digital tools and programs like “Buy Lokal, By OFW.”

Rommel Forbes started EM-AR Handicrafts Trading after returning in 2020. DMW provided training and guidance, while GCash helped manage payments, reducing cash handling challenges. He now runs a business that generates jobs and showcases local craftsmanship.

Helping OFWs Build Stability Closer to Home

These experiences reflect a broader shift in how returning OFWs can rebuild livelihoods. With GCash and DMW support, the transition is reinforced by access to tools, training, and market opportunities. Through “Buy Lokal, By OFW,” returning workers can turn overseas experience into sustainable businesses, strengthening financial inclusion and helping families stay together.
