Bangsamoro MOTC Inaugurates Upgraded Bongao Port Terminal and Kicks Off Major Expansion

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MOTC-BARMM) has officially inaugurated the newly rehabilitated passenger terminal at Bongao Port in Tawi-Tawi. This significant event took place on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, marking a key milestone in the region's infrastructure development efforts.

Terminal Renovation Funded by 2023 GAAB

MOTC Minister Termizie Masahud revealed that the P20-million renovation project was financed through the 2023 General Appropriations Act of the Bangsamoro (GAAB). The upgraded terminal now boasts modern amenities designed to enhance passenger comfort and convenience.

Key features of the renovated facility include:

  • A dedicated prayer room for travelers
  • Improved comfort rooms
  • A breastfeeding room for mothers
  • An immigration desk for streamlined processing
  • Capacity to accommodate up to 250 passengers

P70-Million Expansion Project Launched

Simultaneously with the terminal turnover, MOTC-BARMM conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for a major expansion of Bongao Port. Minister Masahud announced that this P70-million project falls under the ministry's Modernization of Infrastructure and Facility initiative.

The expansion aims to transform Bongao Port into a more competitive maritime hub, with improvements designed to attract additional investors and potentially open new shipping routes to major Philippine destinations including Davao, Cebu, and Manila.

Officials Celebrate Infrastructure Milestone

Minister Masahud led both ceremonies alongside Tawi-Tawi Governor Yshmael Sali and other local government officials. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure in the Bangsamoro region, which is expected to stimulate economic growth and improve connectivity for residents and businesses in Tawi-Tawi and surrounding areas.
