The Davao City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) has officially announced a temporary closure of the Buhangin underpass for approximately one month to conduct essential rehabilitation work. This critical infrastructure project aims to enhance safety and functionality for all road users.
Closure Details and Timeline
The underpass will be shut down from April 17, 2026, until May 11, 2026, as mandated by City Ordinance No. 0217-26, series of 2026. CTTMO emphasized that this rehabilitation is crucial to ensure the safety of drivers and motorists navigating the area, addressing long-standing issues that have impacted traffic flow.
Traffic Advisory and Alternative Routes
During the closure period, motorists are strongly advised to utilize alternative routes to avoid heavy traffic and potential delays. Specific restrictions will be enforced, including:
- No left turn from Tigatto Bypass Road to C.P. Garcia Highway
- No left turn from Cong. M. Garcia Road to Buhangin Milan, with exceptions for heavy trucks
- No left turns from Dumanlas Road to C.P. Garcia Highway
CTTMO expressed gratitude for public cooperation in a Facebook post on April 16, 2026, stating in Filipino: "We thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Your help is greatly appreciated in ensuring that traffic remains smooth and peaceful while the activity is ongoing."
Support from DPWH-Davao
The Department of Public Works and Highways-Davao Region (DPWH-Davao) has endorsed the closure, urging all motorists to adhere to the traffic schemes implemented by CTTMO. This collaboration underscores the importance of the rehabilitation efforts for regional infrastructure.
Importance of the Buhangin Underpass
The Buhangin Underpass is a vital component of the Diversion Road in the Buhangin area, playing a key role in reducing urban traffic congestion. However, its low-lying tunnel design, equipped with a drainage and pumping system, has faced challenges during heavy rains or equipment malfunctions, leading to water accumulation and flooding that disrupts traffic flow. This rehabilitation aims to mitigate such issues and improve overall efficiency.
