Bukidnon Airport Probing Flight Success Paves Way for 2026 Opening

Bukidnon Airport Moves Closer to Operational Status with Successful Probing Flight

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has achieved a pivotal milestone in the development of the Bukidnon Airport, following the successful execution of a probing flight on its runway. This critical test, led by DOTr Secretary Banoy Lopez on Saturday, January 31, 2026, represents a major advancement toward the airport's anticipated opening.

Evaluating Runway Conditions and Safety Protocols

The probing flight was meticulously conducted to assess the runway's conditions, ensuring that aircraft can land safely and efficiently once the airport becomes fully operational. This activity is an integral component of the national government's initiative to accelerate the completion of the Bukidnon Airport Development Project, which aims to enhance regional infrastructure.

Comprehensive Inspection of Airport Facilities

In addition to the runway assessment, Secretary Lopez, accompanied by senior officials from the DOTr, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap), and the Office for Transportation Security (OTS), conducted a thorough inspection of key airport facilities. The team examined:

  • The passenger terminal building
  • The arrival area
  • The runway extension
  • The cargo facility
  • The control tower

This translates to the President's directive to fast-track construction due to its vital role in connectivity and economic benefits for Mindanao residents, with the airport being modernized for passenger and tourist comfort.

Timeline and Strategic Planning for Completion

The airport project is currently targeted for completion by the fourth quarter of 2026. Officials identified remaining concerns and explored strategies to streamline construction and future airport operations. Secretary Lopez highlighted that early completion will yield long-term benefits for Bukidnon, including:

  1. Boosting tourism in the region
  2. Improving regional connectivity
  3. Supporting local businesses

According to Lopez, contractors have been given a deadline of November 30, 2026, to complete all airport facilities, enabling commercial turboprop flights to commence by December 2026. Jet aircraft operations are projected to follow in the first quarter of 2027.

Collaboration with Local Government and Future Outlook

The DOTr has committed to working closely with the local government of Don Carlos, Bukidnon, to address outstanding issues, such as problems with road right-of-way, to prevent any delays in the project. Once fully operational, the Bukidnon Airport is expected to serve up to 425 passengers at a time, positioning it as a key infrastructure project that will drive economic growth and tourism in the province.

This development underscores the government's dedication to enhancing transportation networks in Mindanao, fostering economic opportunities, and improving accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
