Just over a week into its operation, the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (CBRT) system has already yielded promising results, showcasing the effectiveness of modern transportation infrastructure in Cebu City. Early data indicates that this project is proving highly effective in addressing traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours.
Positive Feedback from Drivers and Commuters
Several bus and jeepney drivers along the CBRT route have shared positive observations with local media. "Traffic has definitely become smoother," remarked a driver of the 17B jeepney, whose route runs from downtown to Cebu IT Park in Barangay Apas. This sentiment is echoed by many, highlighting the immediate impact of the new system.
Significant Reduction in Travel Times
The decrease in travel time serves as clear evidence of the system's success, offering hope for resolving decades-long traffic issues in the city. Prior to the CBRT's implementation, traveling from N. Bacalso Avenue to Cebu IT Park during peak hours was a test of patience, often taking over an hour. With the CBRT now operational, this journey has been reduced to just 36 to 40 minutes, according to reports from the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO).
This nearly 60% reduction in travel time is not coincidental; it is a direct result of the dedicated median lanes implemented in Package 1. By separating buses from private vehicles and motorcycles, the system demonstrates that proper infrastructure is indeed the solution to urban traffic congestion.
Expanded Lane Usage and Ongoing Adjustments
Initially, only buses were permitted to use the BRT lanes, as per the original plan, which provided some relief from traffic. However, after five days, the government decided to allow modern and traditional jeepneys to also utilize these lanes, further alleviating congestion by reducing their mix with private transport.
