Cebu City Councilor Urges Action on Dangerous 'Spaghetti Wires'

Councilor Eugene Andaya, chairman of the Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Mandaue City, has called for immediate action to address the growing safety hazard posed by dangling and unorganized wires, commonly known as "spaghetti wires." This issue was notably observed along M.J. Cuenco Avenue in Cebu City on Monday, February 17, 2025, and has persisted despite previous efforts.

Safety Risks Highlighted

In a phone interview, Andaya emphasized that the presence of low-hanging and loose wires is widespread across the city, particularly on major roads and barangay streets frequented by large vehicles. He explained that many of these wires are installed too low, making them susceptible to snagging on vehicles such as container vans and wing vans.

If entangled, the wires can snap or fall, posing significant dangers to motorists and pedestrians. Andaya stressed that while the city has previously dispatched engineering teams to remove and organize these wires, the problem has resurfaced, prompting him to push for a new resolution as a reminder for authorities to act again.

Specific Areas of Concern

Andaya identified several locations where the issue is particularly evident, including Barangay Pagsabungan, Plaridel Street, and the barangays of Labogon and Paknaan. He also noted that some companies install cables without proper coordination, sometimes even at night, exacerbating the disorganization.

Reflecting on past practices, Andaya mentioned, "Before, when I was still a barangay councilor in Paknaan, we would call the telcos and require them to coordinate and secure permits before installing. That way, installations were more organized."

Call for Coordination and Safety Focus

Despite the lack of penalties for violating companies, Andaya emphasized that the primary goal is to ensure public safety to prevent accidents. He has urged the City Engineering Office to re-inspect the situation and collaborate with telecommunication and cable service providers to resolve the problem effectively.

This renewed push aims to mitigate risks and enhance infrastructure management in the city, highlighting the ongoing challenges in maintaining orderly urban environments.
