DPWH Davao City Demolishes Dilapidated Pedestrian Overpass During Holy Week
In a strategic move to leverage reduced traffic during the holiday period, personnel from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Davao City District Engineering Office, in close coordination with the City Engineer's Office, have initiated the partial demolition of a deteriorating pedestrian overpass. This critical infrastructure project is located in front of the former NCCC Mall VP, now known as the old Victoria Plaza, along JP Laurel Avenue in Davao City.
Timing and Execution of Demolition Work
The demolition activities were meticulously scheduled for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, specifically on April 2 and 3, 2026. This timing was chosen to take full advantage of the lighter traffic flow typically observed during the Holy Week break, thereby minimizing disruptions to daily commuters and local businesses.
Crews worked diligently from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days, focusing on the removal of key structural components. This included the frame, slab, and stairways of the overpass. To facilitate this process, portions of the road were temporarily closed, with authorities implementing a diversion plan for motorists.

Motorists were redirected through the property of the former Victoria Plaza, which ceased its operations on December 31, 2025, after serving the community for over three decades. It is noteworthy that demolition work is also currently underway inside the mall itself, indicating a broader redevelopment effort in the area.
The DPWH has issued a warning that additional road closures are anticipated in the coming days. These closures will be necessary for the removal of the overpass girders, which are integral to the structure's support system.
