MacArthur Highway Rehabilitation in Apalit Set for Early Completion
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office III has announced that the rehabilitation of a critical section along the MacArthur Highway in Apalit town, Pampanga, is projected to be finalized by April 2026. This development marks a significant acceleration, as the project is now expected to conclude two months ahead of its original target date of July 2026.
Project Progress and Timeline
As of Monday, February 23, 2026, the northbound lane of the highway has reached near-completion status, signaling rapid advancement in the construction efforts. The transparency board at the project site initially indicated a July 2026 finish, but recent updates confirm the earlier April deadline.
The expedited timeline follows direct intervention from key local officials. Pampanga Vice Governor Dennis Pineda and Apalit Mayor Jun Tetangco formally requested the early completion of the rehabilitation work. In response, during an inspection conducted last January, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon issued directives to the DPWH Pampanga First District Engineering Office and the project contractor to prioritize finishing the project before the onset of the rainy season.
Background and Community Impact
This road section has been a longstanding concern for residents and motorists, having remained unfinished for several years prior to the current rehabilitation efforts. The deteriorated condition of the highway not only caused significant inconvenience but also contributed to vehicular accidents, posing safety risks.
During last year's rainy season, the area became particularly problematic, as the road transformed into a catch basin for floodwaters. This led to severe traffic jams and further exacerbated transportation challenges in the region. The early completion aims to mitigate these issues, improving both safety and traffic flow for the community.
The DPWH's commitment to this accelerated schedule underscores a broader effort to enhance infrastructure resilience and public welfare in Pampanga. With the project on track for an April finish, local authorities anticipate a smoother travel experience and reduced flood-related disruptions in the upcoming months.
