DPWH Declares MacArthur Highway Ready for Holy Week Travel Surge
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon has confirmed that the crucial stretch of MacArthur Highway in Barangay Mabiga, Mabalacat City, Pampanga is now fully prepared to accommodate the anticipated influx of motorists returning to the province for the Holy Week observance. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced this development following a comprehensive inspection conducted by Secretary Dizon on Holy Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
Final Inspection Ensures Road Safety and Readiness
Secretary Dizon personally oversaw the remaining repair works on the highway to verify that all necessary improvements have been completed. This proactive measure aims to guarantee that the roadway is not only operational but also safe for the thousands of vehicles expected to traverse it during the peak travel period. The inspection focused on addressing any potential hazards and confirming that the infrastructure meets the department's stringent safety standards.
In addition to the MacArthur Highway assessment, Secretary Dizon visited Jasa Road in San Fernando, Pampanga, where he directed the removal of illegally-parked vehicles and trucks that were causing significant obstructions. This action aligns with the broader initiative to maintain clear and accessible roads throughout the region.
Strategic Importance of MacArthur Highway
MacArthur Highway serves as a vital segment of the national road network, efficiently connecting Clark and the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). Its strategic location makes it a primary route for travelers heading to and from Central Luzon, particularly during holiday seasons like Holy Week when traffic volumes typically surge.
The completion of these repair works directly supports President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s earlier directive to ensure all roads and major highways are "obstruction-free." This policy is designed to facilitate smoother travel experiences for motorists, reduce overall trip durations, and promote fuel efficiency by minimizing unnecessary stops and delays.
Nationwide Waterway Maintenance Efforts Continue
Simultaneously, the DPWH has reported that cleaning, dredging, and desilting operations are actively underway across major waterways nationwide throughout the Holy Week period. These efforts are critical to preparing the infrastructure for the upcoming rainy season, ensuring that drainage systems are functional and flood risks are mitigated.
Key regions currently undergoing these maintenance activities include Metro Manila, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Naga, Cebu, Bacolod, and Maguindanao. The coordinated approach underscores the department's commitment to comprehensive infrastructure management, addressing both road and waterway systems to enhance public safety and convenience.
The timely completion of the MacArthur Highway repairs, coupled with the ongoing waterway maintenance, reflects the DPWH's dedication to proactive infrastructure management. These initiatives collectively aim to support the traveling public during the Holy Week and beyond, ensuring that essential transportation corridors remain reliable and efficient throughout the year.
