New Mandaue-Lapu-Lapu Ferry Service Set to Launch in April 2026
In a significant development for local transportation, a new passenger ferry service connecting Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City is scheduled to commence operations in April 2026. The service, officially launched on March 18, 2026, aims to enhance connectivity and provide a more affordable commuting option for residents.
Grand Launching Ceremony and Key Officials
The Gothong Seabus, specifically the GT Express Uno managed by Carlos A. Gothong Lines Inc. (Cagli), was formally introduced during a grand launching ceremony. The event was attended by Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo “Jonkie” Ouano and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” Chan, along with other local officials, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this initiative.
Operational Details and Timeline
According to Cagli President Calvin Boniface Gothong, the ferry trips are expected to start after Semana Santa (Holy Week). The service is designed to support efforts in improving public transportation links between the two cities, addressing the rising fuel prices that have impacted transportation costs. Mayor Ouano advocated for reducing the fare to P20 from the initially proposed P35 to make it more accessible to passengers, describing the project as a timely aid to alleviate residents' commuting burdens.
Service Schedule and Shuttle Support
The seabus will operate with a minimum of three trips in the morning from Mandaue to Lapu-Lapu and three return trips in the afternoon or evening to cater to workers. To further assist commuters, free shuttle buses will be provided from designated pick-up points at Parkmall, Mandaue City Hall, and Pacific Mall. There will be two shuttle trips in the morning and two in the afternoon, transporting passengers to the GT Ferry Wharf on Zuellig Avenue in Barangay Subangdaku, North Reclamation Area, where they can board the ferry. The ferry will then dock at Muelle Osmeña Lighthouse in Lapu-Lapu City.
Impact and Future Prospects
This initiative is seen as a direct response to the escalating oil prices affecting transportation expenses, offering a sustainable alternative for daily commuters. By improving public transportation infrastructure, the service is poised to benefit thousands of residents and boost economic activity between the two urban centers.
