The construction of a massive P470-million correctional facility in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija, has officially commenced, marking a significant step toward addressing prison overcrowding and stimulating the local economy. This mega-project, led by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), broke ground in Barangay Pinaltakan, with expectations to accommodate up to 7,500 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
Economic and Social Impact
BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. emphasized the project's dual benefits during the ceremony, attended by Governor Aurelio Umali and local residents. He assured that the facility will not only provide much-needed space for inmates but also generate permanent jobs once fully operational. Additionally, local businesses and suppliers are poised to benefit from increased demand for food, materials, and various services, fostering economic growth in the region.
Facility Features and Timeline
The correctional complex will be a comprehensive setup, featuring maximum-, medium-, and minimum-security camps, along with a Reception and Diagnostic Center and a Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center. Built on a vast 60-hectare land donated by the Provincial Government of Nueva Ecija, the project is slated for completion by the end of 2027, aiming to enhance rehabilitation efforts and security measures.
This initiative reflects a strategic move to modernize correctional infrastructure while supporting community development through job creation and business opportunities in Nueva Ecija.
