Autism Society Philippines-Davao Expands Employment Program for Individuals with Autism

The Autism Society Philippines–Davao Chapter is intensifying efforts to integrate children and adults with autism into the workforce through its Autism Works program. According to Uswaldo Parreñas, president of ASP-Davao, the organization is actively collaborating with various companies to create job placements for individuals with autism, focusing on malls and other business establishments.

Employment Initiatives and Partnerships

Parreñas highlighted that SM City Davao has already employed individuals with autism, though these placements are typically short-term. He noted that several other businesses have shown interest in hiring people with autism, but formal agreements and memoranda of understanding are still in the negotiation phase. "This is a small step, but we want to give them hope that there is a chance and a way for them to be included in society," Parreñas stated during the Kapehan sa Dabaw event held on Monday, April 20, 2026, at SM City Davao.

The Autism Works program, which began in 2019, has successfully placed six individuals with autism in jobs across Davao City. After a temporary pause, the program is now being revived due to persistent demand from parents and individuals with autism, driving the group to expand job opportunities further.

Challenges and Support Systems

Parreñas acknowledged the challenges in employing individuals with autism, emphasizing that workers often require specialized training and ongoing support from job coaches. To address this, ASP-Davao conducts post-duty assessments to resolve any issues and prepare workers for future assignments. Additionally, the group is coordinating with the Davao Persons with Disability Affairs Office to establish an Autism Center in the city. This facility aims to support employment initiatives independently from the Davao City Special Needs Intervention Center for Children, which primarily focuses on therapy services.

Community Engagement and Events

Beyond employment efforts, ASP-Davao is gearing up for its annual Angels Walk, scheduled for April 26, 2026. Parreñas expects over 2,000 participants, surpassing last year's turnout. The event will include a short program, performances by children with autism, and a parade around the mall, fostering community awareness and inclusion.

The organization also runs family support programs to assist parents dealing with the high costs of autism care. These programs provide tailored assistance, recognizing the unique needs of families raising children with autism, thereby creating a holistic support network for the autism community in Davao.
