CTUHR Calls for Urgent Government Intervention in Rizal Landfill Tragedy
The Center for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR) issued a strong appeal to government authorities on Monday, demanding immediate and intensified efforts to locate missing workers following a catastrophic collapse at a privately owned landfill in Rodriguez, Rizal. The labor rights organization emphasized the critical need for action amid unconfirmed reports indicating that more than 100 individuals sustained injuries, while approximately 50 scavengers remain unaccounted for.
Scarce Information and Delayed Response Criticized
In a formal statement, the CTUHR expressed deep concern over the lack of transparency and slow response from officials. "It has been three long days since the landfill collapse, and information about the tragedy remains scarce. Where is the National Government in all of this?" the group questioned. They urged authorities to work overtime to rescue the scavengers buried in the trash and provide aid to those who were injured, highlighting the urgency of the situation as time passes.
Details of the Rizal Landfill Incident
The collapse occurred on February 20, resulting in one confirmed fatality and two individuals still missing. This incident follows a similar disaster on January 8 within the Cebu City Government jurisdiction, where a landfill collapse claimed the lives of 36 workers and left 18 others injured. The CTUHR condemned these successive tragedies as unacceptable, pointing to a pattern of negligence that demands immediate governmental intervention.
Demand for Preventive Measures and Accountability
The labor non-government organization stressed that the National Government must take decisive action to prevent such incidents from recurring. "It is simply revolting that the National Government refuses to learn lessons from the landfill tragedies in the country’s history," the CTUHR stated. They underscored the principle that prevention is better than cure, calling for vigilant monitoring and strict enforcement of labor and environmental standards in all landfill operations across the nation.
The CTUHR’s appeal highlights ongoing concerns about workplace safety and environmental hazards in the Philippines, urging a proactive approach to safeguard vulnerable workers and communities from future disasters.
