Davao Region Jeepney Drivers to Receive P5,000 Cash Aid and Fuel Subsidies

Public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers in the Davao Region are set to receive P5,000 in cash assistance under a program led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), officials announced. The distribution is pending final guidelines but aims to provide financial relief amid rising fuel costs.

Comprehensive Support for Transport Sector

In addition to the cash aid, drivers may also benefit from fuel subsidies under the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) Pantawid Pasada Program (PPP), with amounts ranging from P1,000 to P10,000 depending on vehicle type. Ronnel Victor Panigon, LTFRB-Davao Region Transportation Development Officer, stated during the Kapihan sa PIA on March 19, 2026, that this program will extend to approximately 1,000 transport network vehicle service (TNVS) drivers and 3,500 taxi drivers, ensuring broad coverage across the public transport sector.

Panigon explained that these initiatives are designed to offer comprehensive support, with the DOTr distributing fuel subsidies via LandBank cards, while the DSWD's cash assistance for PUJ drivers awaits rollout. He emphasized that the goal is to mitigate the impact of increasing fuel prices on drivers' livelihoods.

Fare Regulations and Penalties

Meanwhile, Atty. Deanne Aubrey Salcedo, Legal Section Assistant of LTFRB-Davao, reminded operators that the LTFRB central office has suspended a previously approved fare increase and issued a fare guide pending further guidelines. She stressed that drivers must continue charging fares according to the existing matrix, and non-compliance will result in administrative penalties.

Salcedo warned that implementing the suspended fare increase would be considered overcharging, a breach of franchise conditions. Penalties include P5,000 for the first offense, P10,000 for the second, and P15,000 plus suspension for the third offense. She urged drivers to adhere strictly to regulations to avoid violations.

Government Commitment to Fair Pricing

Officials highlighted that the cash aid and fuel subsidies are part of the government's broader efforts to support drivers, while maintaining fair pricing for commuters. Authorities encouraged all drivers to comply with fare rules and beneficiaries to claim their financial assistance once distribution begins, reinforcing a balanced approach to economic relief and regulatory enforcement.
