DOLE Introduces TUPAD Tuloy Pasada Program to Support Jeepney Drivers
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has officially launched the TUPAD Tuloy Pasada program, a new initiative designed to provide additional income for jeepney drivers across the Philippines. This move comes as a direct response to the escalating fuel prices that have placed significant financial strain on public transportation operators.
Program Details and Initial Implementation
Under the TUPAD Tuloy Pasada program, eligible jeepney drivers will receive P695 per day, which is equivalent to the minimum wage in the Metro Manila region. This amount is provided on top of their regular daily earnings from passenger fares, offering a crucial financial buffer.
The initial phase of the program will benefit 134 jeepney drivers operating on routes within Metro Manila. These beneficiaries will be identified through a meticulous profiling and validation process conducted by DOLE, with the preliminary list sourced from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
Eligibility and Application Process
Jeepney drivers who are not included in the initial list have the opportunity to apply for the program. They can submit their applications at the nearest DOLE office, where they must present a valid professional driver’s license as a primary requirement.
Qualified drivers will receive support for up to 30 days, ensuring sustained assistance during this challenging period. The program is structured to be accessible and straightforward, minimizing bureaucratic hurdles for those in need.
Broader Goals and Future Expansion
The TUPAD Tuloy Pasada program is a key component of DOLE's broader strategy to mitigate the adverse effects of high fuel prices on public transportation workers. The department has set an ambitious target to support 50,000 jeepney drivers nationwide through this initiative.
Looking ahead, DOLE plans to expand the program to include other affected sectors, such as truck drivers who are essential for transporting agricultural products. This expansion underscores the program's potential to address wider economic challenges within the transportation industry.
By providing this additional income, the TUPAD Tuloy Pasada program aims to enhance the financial stability of jeepney drivers, ensuring they can continue to serve their communities despite rising operational costs. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to supporting vital public service providers in times of economic uncertainty.
