Labor Union Condemns Suspension of PUV Fare Hike as Political Maneuver
The General Alliance of Workers Association (Gawa) has strongly criticized the National Government's decision to suspend the public utility vehicle (PUV) fare hike that was scheduled for March 19, 2026. Gawa Secretary General Wennie Sancho asserted that this suspension is a calculated political move designed to divert attention from the urgent issue of wage increases for workers across the nation.
Government Accused of Deflecting from Wage Demands
Sancho expressed that while Gawa welcomes any measure that alleviates the financial burden on commuters, the group cannot overlook the likelihood that this action serves as a pretext to deny workers a much-needed wage increase. "We see this as a clear indication that the government is not serious about addressing the plight of the workers amidst soaring prices of essential goods and services," Sancho stated emphatically.
He further emphasized that the National Government's silence on wage issues speaks volumes about its priorities. "We demand that the government stops playing politics with the welfare of the people and take concrete steps to address the rising cost of living. A wage increase is not a favor, it is a right," Sancho declared, highlighting the group's unwavering stance.
Questions Raised Over Genuine Intentions
Sancho pointed out that the suspension of the transport fare hike has raised more questions than it has provided answers. He questioned whether the move was a genuine attempt to assist commuters or a strategic effort to stave off labor demands. "One thing is clear, the suspension of transport fare hike had raised more questions than answers," he remarked, underscoring the skepticism surrounding the government's motives.
The labor leader noted that the government's stance on wage increases for private sector workers appears reinforced by its continued silence. "There is no indication that a wage increase for the workers is forthcoming. The government is trying to show that it is looking out for the common man, but in reality, it is just delaying the inevitable," Sancho argued, predicting ongoing struggles for fair compensation.
Background and Call to Action
This controversy follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s earlier announcement to suspend the planned PUV fare hike, which had received approval from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. The increases were set to affect various modes of transport, including jeepneys, buses, airport taxis, and transport network vehicle services.
Sancho called on all workers and concerned citizens to remain vigilant and join the fight for a living wage. He affirmed that Gawa will not be swayed by token gestures and will continue to push for just and fair wages for all workers, ensuring that their demands are not overshadowed by temporary measures.
