Lapu-Lapu City Distributes Rice to Displaced MEPZ Workers Amid Aid Gaps
Lapu-Lapu City Rice Aid for Displaced MEPZ Workers Faces Issues

Lapu-Lapu City Provides Rice Aid to Displaced MEPZ Workers

In a move to support local workers affected by economic downturns, the Lapu-Lapu City Government, through its Public Employment Service Office (Peso), has distributed five kilograms of rice to each of 500 displaced workers from three companies in the Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ). This initiative follows closures and retrenchment in the area, aiming to alleviate immediate hardships for those who lost their jobs.

Prioritizing Residents in Aid Distribution

Peso officer in charge Kim Francisco confirmed in a media interview on Monday, April 13, 2026, that the list of beneficiaries was derived from the companies themselves and then refined to prioritize residents of Lapu-Lapu City. The effort was directed by Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan, with support from the City Social Welfare and Development Office, highlighting a community-focused approach to welfare.

Exclusion of Some Workers Due to Outdated Information

However, the distribution faced challenges as one affected locator, a garments company, reported that approximately 50 of its displaced workers were not included in the aid list, despite being residents of Lapu-Lapu City. Maria Glenda Aclan, senior human resources manager of the company, explained in a separate interview that these workers may have failed to update their personal details, such as addresses or voter registrations, leading to their exclusion.

For instance, Rowena Ybañez, a registered voter and resident of Barangay Basak, was among those missing from the list. Aclan noted that an estimated total of 475 displaced workers from the company are recorded as Lapu-Lapu City residents, and management is actively working to endorse these individuals with updated information to Peso for future assistance.

Efforts to Rectify the Situation

Francisco emphasized that the local office is prepared to assist the affected individuals once their updated information is verified. “We are willing to accept any updates or updated list from the company,” he stated, adding that employees could also present proof of documents, such as voter IDs or residency certificates, to the office to confirm their eligibility. This flexibility aims to ensure that no deserving worker is left behind in the aid process.

The incident underscores the importance of maintaining current personal records in times of crisis, as outdated details can hinder access to vital support. As Lapu-Lapu City continues to address the impacts of job losses in MEPZ, ongoing collaboration between companies, workers, and government agencies is crucial for effective aid distribution.
