The Cebu Association of Local Tourism Officers (Calto) is intensifying its campaign against the proliferation of online booking scams in Cebu, as part of preparations for the upcoming summer season. This move aims to safeguard tourists and maintain the integrity of the local tourism industry.
Collaborative Efforts with Provincial Authorities
Calto President Earl Endab, who also serves as the Municipal Tourism Officer of Badian, revealed in an online interview with SunStar Cebu on Sunday, March 1, 2026, that the association has established a strong partnership with the Cebu Provincial Tourism Office to address this pressing issue. This collaboration underscores a unified approach to combat fraudulent activities targeting visitors.
Key Measures Implemented
According to Endab, one of the primary steps taken involves updating and publishing lists of legitimate tourism establishments on the official social media pages of local government units (LGUs). "Each tourism office has updated its list of legitimate establishments and published it on their respective social media platforms to serve as a public guide," he added. This initiative is designed to provide travelers with reliable information and reduce the risk of falling victim to scams.
Engagement with Law Enforcement and Media
Calto has also engaged with the PNP Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit (Racu) to clarify reporting protocols for online scams. These discussions were held during meetings organized by the Provincial Tourism Office, ensuring that legal frameworks are in place to prosecute offenders. To enhance public awareness, Calto has partnered with media outlets to educate netizens about ongoing online scams as part of a broader public awareness campaign.
Policy Development and Platform Partnerships
Provincial Board Tourism Committee Chair Red Duterte has expressed support for exploring potential policies at the provincial level to further strengthen anti-scam measures. Additionally, tourism offices are encouraged to partner with accredited booking platforms, promoting secure and verified booking options for tourists. These efforts collectively aim to create a safer environment for both domestic and international visitors to Cebu.
