Siargao's Cloud 9 Towers Set for Major Facelift Ahead of World Surf League Event
As the World Surf League QS6000 International Pro approaches, the iconic Cloud 9 Towers in General Luna, Siargao Islands, are undergoing a significant renovation to welcome elite surfers and fans to this renowned surfing paradise. The Philippine Sports Commission, in collaboration with the local government of General Luna and the province of Surigao del Norte, is leading this project to restore a symbol of Siargao's surfing heritage.
Renovation Aims to Elevate Surfing Heritage and Boost Tourism
PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio emphasized that restoring the Cloud 9 Towers is about elevating Siargao's surfing legacy to the global stage. The project, formally launched with an agreement signed by key officials including Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers and Mayor Johnson Sajulga, focuses on providing a world-class venue that reflects the resilience of the surfing community. Governor Barbers highlighted that this renovation is more than just rebuilding; it aims to restore Siargao's heartbeat and enhance local livelihoods through increased tourism.
World Surf League Event Upgrades and Cultural Significance
The World Surf League QS6000 International Pro, scheduled for October 16–25, marks a major upgrade from the annual Siargao International Surfing Cup, offering higher ranking points and prize money to attract top surfers worldwide. Mayor Sajulga noted the tower's cultural importance, stating that a visit to Siargao feels incomplete without a photo of the Cloud 9 Towers. Originally built in 2003, the towers have been central to Siargao's surf culture but were severely damaged by Super Typhoon Odette in 2021, leaving only a partially rehabilitated platform.
New Design Features and Sustainable Development
The proposed three-storey watchtower will serve as a premier viewing platform for spectators and media, offering excellent vantage points for competitions. Plans include a two-storey viewing platform and event space powered by solar energy, ensuring environmental sustainability. Vice Mayor Romina Rusillon-Sajulga expressed that restoring this iconic tower is a dream for Siargao residents, symbolizing recovery from Typhoon Odette. With Siargao designated as the national training center for water sports, this upgrade reinforces its reputation as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines, cementing the Cloud 9 Towers as a global symbol of Philippine surfing.
