Lapu-Lapu Gallery Reopens After P1M DOT Modernization

Lapu-Lapu Gallery Set for March Reopening After Major P1 Million Modernization Project

The Lapu-Lapu Gallery, a compact exhibition space located within the historic Lapu-Lapu Shrine complex in Mactan, Cebu, is scheduled to reopen its doors in March 2026. This revival comes after a significant P1 million modernization initiative funded entirely by the Department of Tourism (DOT), aimed at revitalizing the facility and enhancing its appeal to both locals and tourists.

Enhanced Facilities and Cultural Displays

Garry Lao, the head of the Lapu-Lapu City Tourism Office, has detailed the extensive renovations that have transformed the gallery. The upgraded space now boasts improved facilities and a redesigned interior that began in late 2025. The focus is on creating a more vibrant and engaging environment while steadfastly preserving the rich cultural identity of Lapu-Lapu City.

Visitors to the renovated gallery will be treated to a carefully curated collection that highlights local heritage. Key displays include traditional arnis sticks and intricate shell crafts, alongside a diverse array of homegrown products such as pan bisaya. The exhibition also features an impressive selection of paintings, sculptures, and digital artworks created by talented local artists, offering a comprehensive glimpse into the region's artistic prowess.

Funding and Inspiration Behind the Renovation

The impetus for this modernization project stemmed from a suggestion by former DOT Central Visayas Director Judy Gabato. After attending the Noreak Exhibit at the gallery in July 2025, Gabato recommended allocating DOT funds specifically for the enhancement of this art facility. This recommendation was swiftly acted upon, leading to the commencement of interior renovations in December 2025.

The primary goal of these renovations is to establish a lively and dynamic space that not only supports local artists but also provides an enriched experience for all visitors. Despite the gallery's temporary closure for these upgrades, it demonstrated remarkable resilience and popularity in the preceding months.

Steady Visitor Growth and Upcoming Initiatives

From February to November 2025, the Lapu-Lapu Gallery experienced consistent growth in visitor numbers, even as renovations loomed. Attendance peaked notably in November, with 226 visitors accounting for 22.6 percent of the total, largely driven by benchmarking activities. Other high-traffic months included October, which saw 144 visitors (14.4 percent) during the Korean Paint Exhibit, and February, with 129 visitors (12.9 percent) from various school field trips.

The gallery is expected to reopen by the second week of March 2026, following the completion of final touches. In conjunction with this reopening, tourism officials have ambitious plans to launch a circuit tour, which was previewed in January during the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026.

This tour will showcase key attractions in Lapu-Lapu City, including the Liberty Shrine in Barangay Mactan and the Lapu-Lapu City Hall. At the city hall, visitors can enjoy artist meet-and-greet sessions and view demonstrations of traditional crafts such as kulit art, seashell crafts, and guitar making, further enriching the cultural experience.
