LAPU-LAPU City Lone District Representative Junard "Ahong" Chan has issued a strong call for immediate action in response to alarming allegations that a group of men reportedly scammed tourists by charging excessive fees for transportation, island hopping activities, and food services. The incident, which has sparked widespread concern, was highlighted in a Facebook post by Chan on Thursday, April 16, 2026, where he emphasized the urgent need to address these practices to protect the integrity of local tourism.
Threat to Tourism Reputation
In his public statement, Chan raised serious concerns about how such fraudulent activities could severely damage the area's reputation as a tourist destination. He pointed out that both the City Government and private tourism stakeholders have been investing significant effort and resources to attract visitors, and incidents like this could undermine those hard-won gains. "Grabe kapataas sa singil sa transportation, sa island hopping ug sa pagkaon. Di mahimo ni ilang gibuhat (Charges for transportation, island hopping, and food were excessively high. What they did is unacceptable)," Chan stated, underscoring the severity of the alleged overcharging.
Video Evidence and Public Appeal
The allegations gained traction after a video was uploaded by a tourist who claimed to have been overcharged during their visit. This visual evidence has brought the issue to the forefront, prompting Chan to urge anyone who can identify the men involved to come forward and assist in reporting them. He made a direct appeal to the public, stressing that community cooperation is crucial in holding perpetrators accountable and preventing future scams.
Call for Surrender and Consequences
In a stern message directed at the alleged perpetrators, Chan encouraged the individuals responsible to voluntarily surrender and face the consequences of their actions. He warned that such unethical practices not only harm tourists but also tarnish the local economy and trust in tourism services. The lawmaker's firm stance highlights a broader commitment to ensuring fair and transparent business practices in the region, aiming to safeguard both visitors and the tourism industry's sustainability.
