President Marcos Officially Opens Mactan Expo in Lapu-Lapu City

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the inauguration of the Mactan Expo on Monday, March 16, 2026, at The Mactan Newtown in Lapu-Lapu City. This event marks the official opening of what is known as the first two-level stand-alone convention center in Cebu, a project completed in less than two years.

Strengthening Tourism and Business Activities

In his speech, President Marcos emphasized that the new facility is expected to significantly strengthen tourism and business activities across the country. He highlighted that the convention center is specifically designed to host large-scale international events, including the upcoming ASEAN Summit 2026 scheduled for May.

The Mactan Expo features a pillar-free main plenary hall capable of accommodating more than 2,500 guests. This design ensures unobstructed views and flexible space for various events, from conferences to exhibitions.

Infrastructure and Opportunities

Kevin Tan, president and chief executive officer of Alliance Global Group, noted that the infrastructure project was completed in a remarkably short timeframe. Tan expressed optimism that the facility will open more opportunities for tourism, business, and investments in the Philippines.

Located within The Mactan Newtown, the convention center includes:

  • Spacious pre-function areas for networking and gatherings.
  • Exclusive VIP rooms designed for high-level meetings and discussions.

The facility is poised to serve as a premier hub for Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) in the region, attracting both local and international events.

Strategic Location and Accessibility

The Mactan Expo offers direct access to nearby resorts and is situated approximately 10 minutes from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. This strategic location enhances its appeal for travelers and event organizers seeking convenience and connectivity.

Dignitaries in Attendance

Among the notable figures present during the inauguration were:

  1. Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan.
  2. Lone District Representative Junard “Ahong” Chan.
  3. Vice Mayor Celedonio Sitoy.
  4. Members of the City Council.

Their presence underscored the local government's support for this development, which is set to boost economic growth and international engagement in the area.
