President Marcos Inaugurates P1.5-Billion Mactan Expo Convention Center in Cebu

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. officially opened the P1.5-billion Mactan Expo on Monday, March 16, 2026, marking a significant milestone for Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu. This two-level standalone convention center, developed by Megaworld Corp., is the first of its kind in the city and is poised to enhance Cebu's reputation as a premier hub for meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (Mice).

Strengthening Tourism and Business Amid Global Challenges

During the inauguration ceremony, President Marcos emphasized the facility's role in stimulating tourism and business activity, even as global uncertainties, such as tensions in the Middle East, persist. He highlighted that the Mactan Expo is designed to host large-scale international events, including the upcoming 48th Asean Leaders' Summit in May 2026, which the Philippines, specifically Cebu, is scheduled to host.

"In many years to come, this will be remembered as a facility not only for Cebu, not only for Lapu-Lapu, but for the entire Philippines," Marcos stated, underscoring the national significance of the project.

Public-Private Partnership and Infrastructure Development

The President also praised the collaboration between the government and private sector, noting that public-private partnerships are crucial for accelerating infrastructure development and delivering better services and economic opportunities. He was joined at the event by Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" King-Chan, Vice Mayor Celedonio Sitoy, Lone District Rep. Junard "Ahong" Chan, members of the City Council, and private sector representatives.

Marcos had previously led the capsule-laying ceremony for the Mactan Expo in April 2024. The 10,000-square-meter Mice facility soft-opened in January 2026, hosting the Asean Travel Exchange 2026, and has since been preparing for larger events.

Key Features and Future Prospects

Kevin Tan, president and chief executive officer of Alliance Global Group, expressed optimism about the facility's impact, stating, "The Mactan Expo serves as an important platform for Cebu and for the Philippines, opening new opportunities for tourism, business, and investment in our country."

The convention center boasts a high-ceiling, pillarless convention hall that can accommodate nearly 3,000 guests in a theater-style setup. Additional amenities include:

  • Meeting rooms for smaller gatherings
  • Spacious foyers for networking
  • VIP lounges for distinguished guests
  • A showroom area for exhibitions and trade events

Complementing this development, Megaworld is also constructing the Mactan World Museum, which aims to showcase Cebu's rich history and heritage, further enhancing the township's appeal as a tourism destination.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the Mactan Expo represents a strategic move to bolster Cebu's economy through enhanced Mice capabilities. With its state-of-the-art facilities and support from both public and private sectors, the convention center is set to play a pivotal role in attracting international events and fostering regional growth.
