Mactan-Cebu Airport Hits Record 1.3M Passengers in January 2026
MCIA Sets Record with 1.3M Passengers in January 2026

In a remarkable achievement for Philippine aviation, the Aboitiz-run Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has reported handling a record-breaking 1.3 million passengers in January 2026. This figure represents a substantial 15 percent increase compared to the same month last year, when the airport served 1.1 million passengers. The surge is attributed to robust travel demand and a significant rise in international traffic, setting a new monthly high in the airport's operational history.

Strong Start to 2026 with Sustained Growth

The January total not only marks the highest monthly passenger traffic ever recorded at MCIA but also underscores a sustained upward trend in travel to and from Cebu. Domestic passenger traffic saw a healthy 12 percent year-on-year increase, while international traffic experienced an even more impressive jump of 25 percent. Airport officials have highlighted that these numbers reflect the ongoing demand for Cebu as both a destination and a transit point, bolstering its reputation in the regional aviation landscape.

Sinulog Festival and New Routes Drive Traffic Surge

The growth in passenger numbers was partly fueled by the influx of tourists and returning overseas Filipinos during the Sinulog Festival, a major cultural event in Cebu. Additionally, the expansion of international connections played a crucial role, with new routes and increased airline services contributing to the uptick. In 2025, MCIA successfully launched eight new routes and welcomed new carriers, including Jetstar Airways, Vietnam Airlines, Firefly Airlines, and Aero K. These additions have strengthened Cebu's links to regional and long-haul markets, enhancing its connectivity.

Athanasios Titonis, chief executive officer of Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corp., commented on the achievement, stating, "This exceptional start to 2026 is a testament to the growing demand for Cebu as a global destination and a key transit hub. Our strategy of expanding the network — bringing in new airline partners and opening direct links to cities such as Hanoi, Cheongju, Brisbane, and Macau — is delivering results. We remain focused on sustaining this momentum while ensuring a seamless and welcoming passenger experience."

Cebu's Growing Role as a Gateway

Julius G. Neri Jr., general manager and chief executive officer of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority, emphasized the collaborative efforts behind the success. He noted, "These figures highlight Cebu's role as an ideal gateway to the Philippines. We are optimistic that this growth trajectory will continue as we expand access to more global destinations." The results reflect close cooperation between the government and private sector, showcasing a unified approach to enhancing airport operations and tourism.

As the country's second-busiest airport, MCIA is actively strengthening Cebu's position as a regional hub. Initiatives like CEBConnects are designed to facilitate easier transfers for connecting passengers, while further route launches and infrastructure upgrades are planned for 2026 to accommodate the rising traffic. This proactive approach aims to support continued growth and maintain MCIA's status as a vital component of the Philippines' transportation network.
