Lubao Bamboo Hub Secures P40 Million for Major Tourism Expansion
The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) has committed an additional P40 million to expand the Lubao Bamboo Hub in Barangay Catalina, Pampanga, bringing a Loboc-style river dining experience closer to Kapampangans and visitors alike. This significant investment aims to elevate the eco-tourism site into a premier destination, with construction targeted for completion within the year.
Enhancing Facilities with a New Floating Restaurant
The funding will support the development of Phase 2 of the hub, which includes the construction of another floating restaurant. This new addition will complement the existing 100-square-meter floating restaurant and 900-linear-meter hanging bridge, both previously built by TIEZA. Inspired by the popular river dining attractions in Loboc, Bohol, the expansion is designed to attract a surge in tourist arrivals once the eco-destination formally opens.
TIEZA Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid confirmed that Phase 2 will proceed following the successful completion of Phase 1, which involved over P20 million in investments. Lapid, along with Lubao Mayor Esmeralda Pineda and Board Member Maynard Lapid, conducted an inspection of the facility on Monday to assess progress and plan for the upcoming developments.
Boosting Local Economy and Sustainable Tourism
Mayor Pineda highlighted the project's broader impact, noting that the expansion is expected to generate more jobs and livelihood opportunities for local residents. "This initiative will not only boost tourism but also support small businesses and promote local products, particularly bamboo-based crafts," she explained. Pineda emphasized that the project aligns with goals for sustainable and community-driven tourism growth, ensuring that benefits are shared with the community.
The Lubao Bamboo Hub, managed by the Municipal Government of Lubao, has already established itself as a popular tourism spot. It attracts families and health enthusiasts with features like covered pathways, bike lanes, and a fish spa. Visitors are drawn to the serene environment, where they can enjoy leisurely strolls under a forest-like canopy formed by hundreds of bamboo clumps lining the eco-park.
Tourist Numbers and Future Prospects
Before the pandemic in 2019, the hub recorded approximately 70,887 tourist arrivals. In 2023, as pandemic restrictions eased, it registered about 38,579 visitors, showing a strong recovery trend. According to municipal government data, the site now attracts an average of 600 visitors on weekends, indicating growing interest and potential for further growth with the new facilities.
The expansion project underscores a commitment to enhancing sustainable tourism while showcasing local culture and natural beauty. By integrating eco-friendly practices and community involvement, the Lubao Bamboo Hub is poised to become a model for tourism development in the region, offering unique experiences that resonate with both domestic and international travelers.
