Philippine Airlines Showcases Flagship A350-1000 in Davao, Highlighting Mindanao's Aviation Growth

Long recognized as the economic engine of southern Philippines, Mindanao is gaining stronger recognition as a growth market for aviation, tourism, and investment. With Davao City serving as its commercial hub, the region's expanding economy and rising passenger demand are drawing increased interest from airlines looking to strengthen operations beyond the country's traditional gateways.

Strategic Showcase in Davao City

That momentum was clearly evident on March 5, 2026, when Philippine Airlines brought its flagship Airbus A350-1000 to Francisco Bangoy International Airport. This event marked the aircraft's first domestic appearance in Mindanao, following its entry into the airline's fleet in late 2025. Notably, this aircraft stands out as the first A350-1000 operated by any airline in Southeast Asia.

The special flight allowed aviation stakeholders, tourism officials, and media members to tour the aircraft while highlighting Davao's growing role as an aviation gateway in the southern Philippines.

"There's a very good reason we're coming back—we wanted to showcase our new aircraft to the Southern Philippines. So here it is today," said Justin Warby, vice president for sales and distribution of Philippine Airlines, during a familiarization tour.

Warby explained that the airline deliberately chose Davao for the domestic showcase because of its strategic location and expanding economy.

"Davao sits in a very strategic location for the southern Philippines," he emphasized. "It continues to grow as a business and tourism hub, and from an airline perspective, that creates opportunities for stronger connectivity and future expansion."

He added that improving infrastructure and a growing passenger base make Mindanao an increasingly attractive market for aviation investment.

"When we look at the trajectory of Mindanao's economy, the indicators are very encouraging," Warby noted.

Advanced Aircraft Features and Capabilities

The Airbus A350-1000 represents a key step in Philippine Airlines' fleet modernization program. Designed primarily for ultra-long-haul routes, particularly flights linking the Philippines to North America, the aircraft carries 382 passengers across three cabin classes:

  • 42 Business Class suites
  • 24 Premium Economy seats
  • 316 Economy seats

One of its standout features is the upgraded Business Class product known as the Mabuhay Studio. The cabin uses a 1-2-1 layout, giving every passenger direct aisle access.

The 42 suites feature Collins Aerospace Elevation seats designed for privacy and comfort on long-haul flights. Each suite includes:

  • A sliding door for enhanced privacy
  • Conversion into a fully flat bed
  • Approximately 44 inches in pitch and 20.25 inches in width
  • Center suites with an open-ceiling design as overhead bins shift to the aircraft's sidewalls

Passengers also benefit from advanced onboard technology, including:

  • 20-inch 4K entertainment screens with Bluetooth connectivity
  • Universal AC outlets
  • USB-A and USB-C charging ports
  • Wireless charging pads
  • Complimentary full-flight Wi-Fi for messaging, browsing, and streaming

Regional Significance and Future Prospects

Since making its regional debut in Bangkok in December 2025, the aircraft has flown to major destinations including Singapore, New York City, and Hong Kong. The Davao flight also served as a "market test" for Mindanao, allowing the airline to showcase its newest aircraft while gauging regional travel demand. A similar demonstration flight is scheduled in Cebu City on March 12.

For aviation and tourism stakeholders, the visit signals a broader trend: as Mindanao's economy expands, cities like Davao City are becoming increasingly attractive to airlines seeking to open new routes, connect emerging markets, and support regional growth. The strategic positioning of Davao as a southern gateway continues to draw attention from major carriers looking to capitalize on the region's economic momentum.
