The Philippine Navy has successfully thwarted the smuggling of approximately P18.8 million worth of tobacco products in a series of law enforcement operations conducted within a single week in the province of Sulu, military officials announced on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Latest Interception
The Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) reported that the most recent confiscation occurred on Sunday, May 3, when Navy sailors were conducting a routine maritime security patrol. During the operation, they intercepted an unmarked motorboat carrying 73 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated value of P11.2 million.
Earlier Operation
Just a week earlier, on April 26, naval forces intercepted another vessel, M/B Dayang Janna, which was transporting 50 master cases of undocumented cigarettes worth P7.5 million. According to the WMNC, the crew of the vessel failed to present valid documentation for both the boat and its cargo.
All apprehended individuals were informed of their constitutional rights and subsequently transported to Naval Station Romulo Espaldon, which houses the WMNC headquarters in Zamboanga City, for proper documentation and processing.
Legal Proceedings
The WMNC confirmed that the seized tobacco products and the watercrafts involved have been turned over to the Bureau of Customs for appropriate disposition and the filing of charges against the suspects.
In a statement, the WMNC emphasized that these successful operations highlight the Philippine Navy's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country's maritime domain and protecting the national economy from the detrimental effects of illegal smuggling activities.
