PNP HPG Intercepts P221.5M Smuggled Gadgets in Quezon City Operation
PNP Seizes P221.5M Smuggled Gadgets in Quezon City

In a significant anti-smuggling operation, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Highway Patrol Group (HPG) has successfully intercepted four closed truck vans, leading to the seizure of allegedly smuggled gadgets valued at over P221 million. The bust occurred during a targeted operation in Quezon City, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat illicit trade and tax evasion in the country.

Operation Details and Interception

According to HPG Director Brigadier General Hansel Marantan, the operation was conducted in the early hours of Wednesday, January 28, 2026, along Mindanao Avenue in Quezon City. The HPG personnel were acting on verified intelligence regarding a convoy of closed vans suspected of transporting illegal goods from Central Luzon to Metro Manila. The operation was part of the PNP's anti-carnapping and Oplan Sita initiatives, aimed at enhancing road security and curbing criminal activities.

During the operation, the police flagged the four vans for using improvised license plates, raising immediate red flags. Upon conducting standard inspections and verifying documents, operatives observed suspicious behavior from the drivers and noted inconsistencies in the cargo documentation presented. This prompted a voluntary inspection of the vehicles, which revealed a stark discrepancy between the declared and actual contents.

Discovery of Misdeclared Goods

The inspection uncovered that the vans were loaded with cellphones and tablets, contrary to the declared items listed as gadget accessories. Brigadier General Marantan emphasized this misdeclaration, stating, "Hindi naman yan accessories. It's the cellphone ang naka onboard sa mga closed vans, hindi lang accessories." This discovery points to potential violations related to misdeclaration and tax evasion, as the actual goods likely require higher duties and taxes compared to accessories.

Marantan further explained that the misdeclaration prompted the HPG to refer the case to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for a thorough investigation. He noted, "So we will advise especially the BIR to check how much they have paid. Ang sabi niya at the outset misdeclared na yan so that prompted us na ibigay lalo sa BOC para imbestigahan." The seized cargo, with an estimated market value of P221.5 million, has been turned over to the BOC for further verification and legal proceedings.

Impact on Government Revenue

Brigadier General Marantan highlighted the significant financial implications of such smuggling activities, stating, "Malaking impact ito dahil kung ito ay mapapatunayan na hindi sila nagbabayad ng tamang buwis ay malaki ang nalulugi kasi dapat magbayad sila ng tamang buwis sa ating gobyerno." This operation underscores the broader impact on government revenue, as tax evasion through misdeclaration deprives the state of essential funds that could be used for public services and development projects.

The successful interception by the PNP HPG not only prevents the circulation of potentially untaxed goods but also sends a strong message against smuggling and related offenses. Authorities continue to investigate the origins and intended destinations of the seized gadgets, with further updates expected as the BOC progresses with its inquiry.
