University of Cebu Announces Tuition Freeze for 2026–2027 Academic Year
In a significant move to alleviate financial pressures on students and their families, the University of Cebu (UC) has declared that it will not implement any tuition fee increase for the upcoming 2026–2027 school year. This decision, confirmed by Atty. Augusto W. Go, owner and chairman of UC, underscores the institution's dedication to making education more accessible and affordable.
Commitment to Accessible Education
Atty. Augusto W. Go emphasized the university's unwavering commitment to providing quality education without imposing additional financial burdens. "I have always believed that education is life’s greatest equalizer. Students need education, and I’m not going to deny them that part," Go stated during a press briefing on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. He highlighted that this tuition freeze will enable students to pursue their academic goals in fields such as nursing, teaching, law, and medicine without facing extra financial strain.
Strategic Decision Amid Economic Challenges
The university had previously petitioned for a tuition increase, but Go explained that this plan has been shelved. He acknowledged the difficulties many Filipino families are experiencing due to rising living costs and inflation. "People are suffering, but they need education. If you raise your tuition fee while people are struggling, enrollment will drop. But if you maintain or lower tuition, more students can enroll. We will work by the volume," Go remarked. This approach reflects a strategic balance between sustaining UC's operational needs and ensuring that financial constraints do not deprive students of educational opportunities.
Positive Reactions and Long-Term Impact
Education advocates and student groups in Cebu have warmly welcomed the announcement, describing it as a "relief" in the face of ongoing economic challenges. By keeping tuition steady, UC aims to support students while fostering steady enrollment growth, a move that Go believes benefits both the institution and the wider community. "It’s like a cycle. If you don’t give them a good education, they cannot become nurses, teachers, lawyers, or doctors," he added, emphasizing the long-term societal benefits of accessible education.
The tuition freeze at UC serves as a powerful reminder of the university's long-standing commitment to its students, ensuring that higher education remains within reach even during difficult times. This initiative not only provides immediate financial relief but also reinforces UC's role in promoting equitable access to education across the region.
