Seventy-Six Learners in Sulu Town Graduate from Army Literacy Initiative
In a significant milestone for education and peacebuilding efforts, a total of 76 learners have successfully completed the Army Literacy Patrol System (ALPS) program in Panglima Estino, Sulu. The graduation ceremony, held on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Tiptipon National High School, was facilitated by the 21st Infantry Battalion of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade, with military officials announcing the achievement on Wednesday, April 8.
Celebrating Academic Achievement Across Generations
The program's graduates included 49 learners who completed the junior high school level and 27 who finished the elementary level. Among them, Jurraya Taji, aged 70, stood out as the oldest graduate, symbolizing remarkable perseverance in learning to read and write. In contrast, Edimar Sadihar, 16, the youngest graduate, aims to continue his formal education, demonstrating that learning opportunities can transform lives at any age.
Strong Collaboration for Community Development
Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Borras, commander of the 21st Infantry Battalion, emphasized that the graduation reflects a robust collaboration among the Philippine Army, the municipal government of Panglima Estino, and the Department of Education, supported actively by parents and community stakeholders. This partnership is crucial for advancing literacy and fostering community development in the region.
Panglima Estino Mayor Benshar Estino, represented by Nirsin Eron at the ceremony, reaffirmed the municipality's commitment to making education accessible to all and supporting literacy programs. Nur-Aisha Gonzalez, Focal Person of the Department of Education's Alternative Learning System, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the 21st Infantry Battalion for its dedication to improving literacy not only in Panglima Estino but across Sulu province.
Education as a Pathway to Lasting Peace
Brigadier General Alaric Avelino Delos Santos, commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade, underscored that education is a powerful instrument for sustaining peace and empowering communities. Represented by Lieutenant Colonel Rolando Granados at the ceremony, Delos Santos highlighted that the ALPS program goes beyond basic literacy, instilling confidence, strengthening community resilience, and opening opportunities for a better future.
He expressed appreciation to the Department of Education and the municipal government for their unwavering support, noting that strong partnerships are essential for transforming lives and securing lasting peace in Sulu. Meanwhile, Major General Leonardo Peña, commander of the 11th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force-Orion, highlighted the effective partnership between the Philippine Army and the Department of Education, emphasizing education as a foundation for peace and development.
A Commitment to Peacebuilding Through Education
The 21st Infantry Battalion and 1102nd Infantry Brigade are subordinate units of the Sulu-based 11th Infantry Division, also known as the "Alakdan" Division. The ALPS graduation not only celebrated academic achievement but also reinforced the Army's commitment to community-based peacebuilding. This initiative proves that through education, resilience, and unity, a brighter and more peaceful future can be achieved in Sulu, contributing to broader efforts to promote stability and progress in the province.
