Basilan Breaks Ground on New 2-Storey School to Ease Overcrowding
New 4-Classroom School Building Breaks Ground in Basilan

In a significant move to improve educational facilities, Basilan has officially commenced the construction of a new two-story school building designed to alleviate severe overcrowding.

Ceremony Marks Start of Vital Project

Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman personally led the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in Sumisip Central village. The event signaled the start of work on a crucial four-classroom building for the Sumisip National High School.

Governor Hataman emphasized that the project is a direct response to the pressing issue of overcrowded classrooms. He stated that once finished, the modern facility will dramatically upgrade the learning environment for the hundreds of students who attend the school from surrounding communities.

A Partnership for Progress in Education

The project is a collaboration between the Provincial Government and the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MBHTE-BARMM). Hataman highlighted his administration's firm commitment to partnering with the education ministry, viewing investment in schools as a fundamental pillar for the region's long-term development.

"Through this collaboration with MBHTE-BARMM, we are turning our promise of better learning spaces into reality for Basilan's youth," the Governor declared during the ceremony.

Modern Design for Enhanced Learning

Officials from MBHTE-BARMM explained that the new building is part of the region's annual budget for education infrastructure, which targets gaps in facilities across underserved areas.

Dr. Myra Borja Mangkabung provided details on the building's design, noting it will feature modern classrooms, proper ventilation, and durable construction suited to the local climate. "This project will not only provide more space for our students but also create an environment where teaching and learning can thrive," Dr. Mangkabung said.

The new structure at Sumisip National High School represents a concrete step toward resolving classroom shortages and offering students in Basilan a more conducive atmosphere for academic achievement.
