Brandon Espiritu Apologizes for 'Halfies' Remarks

Former Mister Supranational Philippines 2024 Brandon Espiritu has issued a public apology on social media following backlash over his controversial remarks about beauty pageant contestants of mixed heritage, whom he referred to as “halfies.” The controversy began with a heated exchange on Instagram between Espiritu and Filipino-American model and pageant titleholder Jether Palomo.

Origin of the Controversy

During the exchange, Espiritu claimed that the Philippines would struggle to compete in national pageants without Filipinos of foreign descent. Palomo, who often represents the Philippines in male pageants, was crowned Mister Pilipinas Global 2025 and represented the country at Mister Global 2025, finishing in the Top 11. He also gained recognition as the grand winner of a canned tuna brand and first runner-up at Mister Tourism World 2023 in Brazil.

The situation escalated when Palomo commented, “I pledge allegiance to the flag,” referring to the U.S. flag, during a pageant segment where contestants sang in their native languages. Espiritu replied, “Raise that flag brother.” A netizen then questioned why no one sang in Tagalog despite contestants representing the Philippines. Espiritu responded that they do not live in the Philippines. When the netizen suggested they should represent another country, Espiritu said, “Tell that to all the front runners for the Philippines. This country wouldn’t have a chance on the national stage without us halfies.”

Public Backlash

Many netizens expressed disappointment and raised eyebrows, especially during Philippine Independence Month, accusing Espiritu of belittling the abilities of full-blooded Filipinos to win international pageants. Notable figures such as Miss Universe Philippines 2024 first runner-up Stacey Gabriel and renowned Filipino fashion designer Michael Cinco reacted. Stacey noted that the term “halfies” deepens divisions among Filipinos, while Cinco criticized the arrogant behavior of some personalities despite their backgrounds.

Apology and Clarification

In response, Espiritu released a statement apologizing and clarifying his comments. “I am proud to represent the Philippines and proud of my Filipino heritage. The last thing I would ever want is to diminish the accomplishments of Filipinos, whether they are full Filipino, mixed Filipino, or anyone who has had the honor of carrying our flag on the international stage,” he said. He emphasized he never intended to undermine the achievements of Filipinos who have represented the country in various competitions. He also appealed to the public not to involve his businesses, employees, or related organizations, as they had no part in the controversy. Concluding his statement, Espiritu thanked those who criticized him, saying it would serve as a valuable lesson to understand the impact of his words.
