“I never expected that upon waking up, I would kill a person. I just ask for forgiveness because it wouldn’t have happened if not for him.”
This was the account of Ponciano “Poncing” Pueblo, the 59-year-old ex-convict who fatally stabbed his friend Jonard Gutib in Barangay Balud, Dalaguete on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
During an interview with Pueblo at the Dalaguete Police Station on June 12, he said he did not know what made the victim angry at him since they had never fought before.
Pueblo had let Gutib stay in his house for two days while the latter was still looking for a place to rent. They had been friends for a long time, having met in prison as they were both ex-convicts.
Pueblo said he was angered because Gutib provoked him despite the good treatment he had given him since his release from prison.
Earlier investigation revealed that Gutib suddenly hit the double-deck bed where Pueblo was sleeping and said, “Damn you.”
Pueblo was startled and woke up, but his anger intensified when the victim told him, “Draw your bolo because I’m ready.”
Because of this, Pueblo stabbed Gutib in the back, but the victim ran toward the highway. Pueblo chased him until he caught up and slashed him multiple times.
“My bolo, ma’am, was really not meant for people. I only used it when I went to the farm to plant,” the suspect said.
On the day of the incident, Pueblo had even prepared humba (braised pork) for the victim because he wanted them to eat together, but Gutib came home late, so Pueblo fell asleep.
The victim even apologized for provoking the suspect, but Pueblo feared that he might retaliate, so he decided to finish him off.
