Fatal Road Accidents in Cebu Province Rise 26% Despite Lower Overall Cases
Fatal Road Accidents in Cebu Rise 26% in 2026

The number of fatal road accidents in Cebu Province has increased this year, even as overall cases of reckless imprudence resulting (RIR) involving property damage and physical injuries have declined, according to a police official.

Rise in Fatalities

During the forum “Road Incidents in Cebu,” PLTCOL Jose Rovic Villarin expressed concern over the rise in deadly road accidents, despite a general decrease in the total number of incidents. Data presented by Villarin showed that fatalities from RIR or road accidents rose by 26.09 percent, from 69 cases recorded between January and May 27, 2025, to 87 cases during the same period in 2026.

Key Factors

Villarin noted that most road accidents this year involved drivers allegedly under the influence of alcohol, with motorcycles remaining the most common vehicles involved. While overall Property Security Incidents (PSI) involving motorcycles decreased to 1,081 in 2026 from 1,193 in 2025, motorcycle-related accidents still outnumbered those involving four-wheeled vehicles, bicycles, and tricycles.
